Episode Description: Jessica B. Harris may have been born and raised in New York City, but she has Tennessee roots through her father and has spent much of her life split between homes in the Northeast and the South – specifically New Orleans. For more than fifty years, she has been a college professor, a writer, and a lecturer, and her many books have earned her a reputation as an authority on food of the African Diaspora, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the James Beard Foundation. A few years back, Netflix adapted her book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America , into a 4 part docuseries. And I’m very proud to say that she’s a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. This episode was recorded in the Southern Living Birmingham studios, and Sid and Jessica talked about her mother’s signature mac and cheese, the cast-iron skillet she’d be sure to save if ever her house were on fire, and her dear friend, the late New Orleans chef Leah Chase. Free Brain Dump Guide: https://simplyconvivial.com/braindump | Perfectionism promises peace—but only delivers paralysis. So what happens when we let go of perfection and trust God with the story He’s writing? In this episode of the Simplified Organization Podcast, I talk with Annie Rajala, a faithful mom of seven (four at home and three in glory), about how God has used hard seasons—grief, sickness, NICU stays, moving, and more—to shape her heart and home. We discuss how letting go of perfection, taking just five minutes, and trusting the Lord’s timing can create momentum, peace, and gratitude in homemaking. Annie’s journey is a beautiful reminder: the little things—the five minutes, the small goals, the messy journals—are often where God grows our joy the most. 💜 Want help taking five minutes to start? Most modern women weren’t trained to be homemakers—not because they missed home ec, but because our entire culture formed them for employee roles, not ownership. In this episode, Mystie Winckler unpacks how homemakers operate real economies, make high-stakes decisions with scarce resources, and create lasting value—often without recognition or reward. Learn more at convivialcircle.com Drawing from classical definitions of economics and the biblical vision for the home, Mystie reframes homemaking as mission-critical work in God’s world. This episode will reset your mindset and equip you to lead your home like an owner, not a cog in someone else’s machine. If you've ever felt unequipped, unseen, or stuck in survival mode, this conversation is for you. Our upbringing trained us to be employees instead of owners—and that disconnect leads to burnout and guilt at home. Homemaking is real economics. Your home is not just a place of consumption; it’s a center of decision-making, creativity, and discipleship. As a Christian homemaker, your work matters eternally—even if no one gives you a gold star for it. Whether you’re managing routines, teaching kids, or just trying to keep the laundry going, it’s time to see your role with fresh eyes and renewed purpose. 💜 You don’t need a better checklist. You need a better vision. Mystie Winckler encourages moms to organize their attitudes and get traction at home so we are no longer overwhelmed or frustrated with homemaking.
