Esta plétora fílmica de mierda, barro y medievalismo perpetuo, expresa un tipo de cine excéntrico, complejo, rarificado y marginal. Una obra maestra de difícil recepción e inusual ejecución es, no obstante todo, un hecho estético del cual es imposible salir indemnes. Un metraje gigantesco de ciencia ficción basado en la novela homónima de los hermanos Strugatski capaz de cuestionar, con hondura filosófica, el laberinto mismo de la condición humana. Dirigida por el mítico Aleksei German (1938-2013), este largometraje póstumo, que supuso más de una década de filmación, constituye el mejor espectáculo dantesco del cine ruso contemporáneo para abordar un hilo de temáticas universales.
