One of Richmond’s Best Singer/Songwriters, Mackenzie Roark, joins the show to discuss her latest album, Rollin’ High, Feelin’ Low, as well as her music journey, influences, and future plans..

Coming back to Richmond fresh off her first headlining role as a band leader, Mackenzie recounts performing at the Bristol Rhythm & Roots festival in Bristol, TN-VA, the “birthplace of country music.”

Mackenzie’s new album, “Rollin’ High, Feelin’ Low” is a culmination of works that describe her own experiences with love and loss in relationships.. The lyrics resonate on a personal level, speaking to the challenges in our lives that make us who we are. Mackenzie recounts the production process of her album, and how she appreciates the collaboration between musicians and her producer, Trey Burnart Hall.

Later in the episode, Mackenzie plays two amazing acoustic versions of songs from her latest album: “Little Pills” and “Sweet Thing.”

Rejoining the discussion, Mackenzie describes how she has always been comfortable playing solo shows in smaller venues. They talk about the logistical and financial needs required to play as a full band in larger venues. Mackenzie shares a bit about the formation and members of her band (The Hot Pants). Looking forward, Mackenzie describes her goals to open for a band touring the United States, setting up a small tour in Europe, and working on a follow up album.

Toward the end of the episode, Mackenzie describes her musical journey. After picking up a guitar in the fifth grade, she found confidence in her singing abilities through her youth worship band. Having started to write songs as an undergrad student at James Madison University, Mackenzie traveled to Ireland for her Masters degree. While in a creative writing program, she worked with author Joseph O’Connor, brother of the late Sinéad O’Connor, to craft a thesis composed of twelve original songs.

Lastly, Mackenzie looks forward to playing at the same venue in Harrisonburg, VA she once frequented as an audience member, and discusses upcoming shows.
