Hey everybody, this is Dillon. You’re listening to the Solar Power Podcast from Cambio Energy. I have a frequently asked question: Can you install your own solar panels or do you need a licensed contractor or electrician to do it?

In Arizona, technically if you own the house, you are allowed to install your own system as an owner builder. But, you do have to go through the same plan, review, and inspection process. You have to deal with the utility requirements and make sure understand them. You could hire someone like me to put together your drawings. I have done this before where I will do the drawings and get the permit. Then, the homeowner will buy the equipment off of me and go and install it on their own.

Obviously, that doesn’t come with a lot of the warranties as far as the workmanship and all of that. They are taking on their own risk that I won’t be held accountable for if their install isn’t as good as it should be.

It that particular case, the customer was allowed to do it. He went through the review and inspection process and passed, and everything was good. Hopefully, he won’t have any problems.

You do need to be pretty handy. You need to know how to attach things to the roof properly so that you are hitting the rafters. You have to know how to run the electrical for it and how to wire up your disconnects and your interconnections to your house panel.

In theory, sure, you’re allowed to do it. I don’t know how that is in other jurisdictions. I know in ours here, you are allowed to do so.

I hope that helps. Just remember that using a licensed, insured contractor to install it is going to come with workmanship warranties, etc etc that you might not get if you’re doing it on your own.

Thanks for listening. This is the Cambio Energy Solar Power Podcast. I’m Dillon. Take it easy.
