There are trending topics and then there are topics that must be spoken about at all times. Child sexual abuse is one of them. Meet Asher Lovy from Za’akah. Since 2012, Za’akah has been at the forefront of the fight against child sexual abuse in the Orthodox Jewish Community, EDUCATING people about child sexual abuse, securing JUSTICE for survivors, and working to prevent child sexual abuse in our communities. Asher talks to me about abuse prevention and seeking justice for survivors. We also speak in depth about how abuse starts, what kind of culture and circumstances allow sexual abuse to happen, and what we can do as a community to not only prevent it from happening but also the kind of environment we should be fostering for our children to feel safe. While many people feel uncomfortable around this subject and prefer not to talk about it, that is exactly why I WANT to talk about it. Pretending that our communities don’t have any issues and denying that child sexual abuse happens doesn’t shoo the problem away, but only feeds it more.
