Barnabas grew up as a pastor's kid in Minneapolis, MN and professed faith in Jesus as a young child. He grew up having a love/hate relationship with the church and struggling to find his own identity in Christ. After high school he moved to Illinois to attend Wheaton College. In his mid-20s God did a significant work in Barnabas's life to humble him, show him what repentance and grace truly look like, and teach him what it means to genuinely know and serve Jesus.

Barnabas worked in Christian publishing for nearly fifteen years before joining staff at Immanuel in 2019. He is a writer, the author of multiple books, and has co-hosted several podcasts. He has two amazing daughters, one dog, and zero cats. Really the only major crisis in Barnabas's life is a life-long loyalty to Minnesota sports teams.

Barnabas answered these questions about his new book, Hoping for Happiness:

1. What does it mean that you are a "recovering cynic?"

2. "Whatever we find happiness in, we are united by our desire for work that matters and relationships that fulfill." -- How did you discern this in your own life?

3. Hanging our happiness on hooks - can you explain this? How did you come up with this illustration?

4. Submitted question: What are some habits or disciplines you do when you find yourself hanging your happiness on the wrong hooks?

5. Evangeliguilt -- what does this mean and what can we do about it?

6. You speak from your own experience, speaking frankly about your own losses and disappointments. Was this difficult to write? How did you find the courage to share?

7. When did you start writing the book? Did you have the events of 2020 (coronavirus, political, race relations) in your mind?

8. Your other books include Help My Unbelief and The Pastors Kid. This makes for a really great trilogy of books. Do you sense a common theme or way they relate to each other in your thinking?

9. What was it like to work with The Good Book Company?

10. Any words of advice or encouragement for writers and readers?
