A few days before Christmas in 1987, more than 4,000 people boarded the MV Doña Paz in Tacloban, Leyte for a 24-hour voyage to Manila. Five hours before the ship was due to arrive in the Philippine capital, it collided with an oil tanker that burst into flames.
