If everyone on the planet were happy and content, it would not be about food. Having enough food would cure hunger, but it would not create happiness and contentment.

If all humans could be free of war and other scourges, it would be a wonderful thing, but it wouldn’t necessarily bring happiness and contentment. There’s only one thing that can do that.

Love, like a fountain, overflowing in every human heart, could create worldwide happiness and contentment. Where is such love to be found?

Not in “more”. Not in more possessions, not in more accomplishments. Love is not found in “more”, it is found in Presence.

Because love, strangely, is intrinsic. Although all the images we attach to love suggest it is “out there” along with all the Prince Charmings and perfect lovers, love is an inherent quality. Our hearts would not beat without it, our lungs would not fill without it. Love is the sap in life itself, willing us all into action.

So how can it be that something so intrinsic and abundant can feel so scarce?

Because we’ve been taught to look for it elsewhere, in the places that are hard to get to, or only for the most deserving. Somehow we got the idea we’re only worthy of love if we’re really good.

This kind of thinking has left us like thirsty people wandering knee-deep in a lake. We are surrounded by love, we are made of love, but we don’t seem to see it.

This story is all about a beggar who finds his way to this greatest treasure of all, and the story he tells a King who, sick of his riches and yearning for happiness and contentment, finally gets to taste the Elixir of Love.
