Schools That Heal: Design with Mental Health in Mind by Claire Latane Published by Island Press in 2021
In Schools That Heal: Design with Mental Health in Mind, landscape architecture professor Claire Latane argues that for schools to be supportive learning environments, they must be designed with students mental and physical health in mind. Backed by decades of research, Latane shows how schools that nurture a sense of belonging, providing nature-full spaces, and inspire awe improve students' academic performance and reduce stress, anxiety, disorderly conduct, and crime.
Latane highlights ten inspiring examples of schools around the world designed with mental health in mind. In Japan, a community decimated by a tsunami incorporated a wetland into the school landscape to reconnect students with nature. At Sandy Hook Elementary, an inclusive design process helped create a new school that would be a place of healing and learning. The book also addresses how schools can support students and teachers post-COVID with building elements like large windows for natural ventilation and outdoor learning spaces.
