Welcome back to another episode of Sunday Night Mystery and tonight we uncover the chilling tale of Christopher Hampton, a seemingly ordinary man with a horrifying secret lurking beneath the surface.
I’m Brett, and tonight, we’re visiting somewhere familiar to me.
Fishponds in Bristol is where my family established a business in the 1800’s and I spent much of my life as a child, I owned a home in Fishponds and my wife was brought up there.
With so much of my own and my family’s history so deeply rooted in the area I was immediately drawn to the story of Christopher Hampton.
Rapist and Murderer Hampton
The story begins, in the picturesque city of Bath, where cobblestone streets and quaint houses tell tales of simpler times, but a darkness loomed in the form of a brutal rape and murder.
Spilling out of the nightclub with the 2am crowds, Melanie Road bid a cheerful farewell to her boyfriend and friends then began walking home.
Melanie
Melanie had made the journey countless times before but this time was different, this time there was an evil monster waiting for a victim.
Melanie, was described as "bubbly" and ambitious, she had a promising future. A diligent student and aspiring archaeologist, she possessed a wisdom beyond her years.
However, tragedy struck on the eve of her A-Level exams when Melanie ventured out for a night at the Beau Nash nightclub with friends.
Little did she know, it would be her last.
As Melanie made her way home, alone, the streets of Bath, once bustling with life, grew quieter and more ominous. In the darkness, she encountered a horror beyond comprehension.
Melanie, from Bath in Somerset, was just moments from home when she was raped and stabbed 26 times.
The scene of the attack
After the brutal attack in June of 1984, she was left to die in a pool of blood. Her body was found later by a milkman and his 11-year-old son.
Melanie Road, just 17 years old, was tragically assaulted and killed on her way home from a night out in 1984, sending shockwaves through the community and destroying her family forever.
Detectives worked tirelessly to bring Melanie's killer to justice, but it would take over three decades before painter and decorator Christopher Hampton was finally held accountable for his heinous crime.
Hampton's seemingly normal life concealed a dark secret, a secret that would eventually unravel thanks to a routine DNA swab from his daughter.
Little did anyone know, the perpetrator of this heinous crime lived among them, hiding in plain sight behind the facade of a loving husband and father.
Christopher Hampton, a painter and decorator, appeared to lead a mundane existence, donning his white overalls each morning before setting off to work in his silver Toyota.
But behind closed doors, a sinister truth lay buried for over three decades.
Despite his outward appearance of normalcy, Hampton harboured a dark secret, a secret so chilling that it would shake the foundations of trust and decency in his once-idyllic neighbourhood.

His arrest brought a measure of closure to Melanie's family, but the pain of their loss remains.
As Hampton serves his life sentence, the echoes of Melanie's tragic death linger, a reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring quest for justice.
What drove Hampton to commit such unspeakable acts of violence?
How did he manage to conceal his monstrous nature from his loved ones for so long?
Melanie Road's murder remained unsolved for over 30 years until a twist of fate led investigators to Hampton's doorstep, unravelling a web of lies and deceit that had ensnared an entire community.
But perhaps the most haunting aspect of this tale is the sheer normalcy of Hampton's demeanour. To those around him, he was the epitome of an upstanding citizen, a devoted family man.
Yet beneath the surface lurked a predator, preying on the innocence of young women with impunity.
In the end, it was Hampton's daughter's DNA that convicted him.
His 43-year-old daughter had given a routine DNA swab after being arrested for breaking her boyfriend’s necklace during a row.
The swab showed a “familial link” to blood and semen left on Melanie’s body.
And when detectives swabbed Hampton, there was a match.
In May 2016, Hampton, then 64, admitted murdering Melanie at Bristol Crown Court.

He was jailed for life, with a minimum term of 22 years.
Mr Justice Popplewell told the rapist and murderer that he will very likely die in prison.
Despite the passage of time, the memory of Melanie's final moments continues to haunt those who loved her. Her mother, Jean, still recalls the heart-wrenching moment she realized her daughter was gone.
As we reflect on this harrowing story, let’s remember the victims, those whose lives were cut short by senseless violence, and the families left to grapple with the aftermath of betrayal and deceit.
But amidst the shadows of uncertainty, one fact remains clear: Melanie Road was more than a victim. She was a daughter, a friend, a young girl whose life was abruptly stolen by a monster, leaving behind a legacy of unfulfilled dreams.
The untimely death serves as a reminder of the darkness that lurks even in all corners of our world.
But for now, join us next time as we continue to explore the enigmatic realm of Sunday Night Mystery.
Stay safe, and until next time, keep questioning, keep searching, and keep unravelling the mysteries of the world
Time, like a merciless predator, marches on, leaving behind shattered dreams and broken promises.
Yet, amidst the shadows of despair, glimmers of hope remain.
Join us next time as we delve into another chilling mystery that continues to confound investigators and haunt communities. Until then, stay vigilant, and never forget those who have been lost to the shadows.
Although, in the spine-tingling realm of Sunday Night Mystery, some enigmas defy resolution, leaving us to simply ponder secrets of the past.
