The Lord of the Rings book series and The Hobbit film and video game rights were put up for sale last week, much to the astonishment of many.
At the time, a source said that Saul Zaentz Company. was seeking to sell off the fantasy novels' "movie, gaming, merchandise, and live event rights," with a possible price tag of $2 billion.
Fans of the series may ask whether Lord of the Rings isn't owned by Warner Bros. and its subsidiary New Line Cinema. WB certainly believes so, and has responded to the announcement that the rights are up for sale.
