On November 13 Tantrum Theater, Ohio University’s professional theater, begins streaming This is Not What I Expected When I Imagined a Republic, a historical triptych, that is part dance-theatre, part card game, and part good old kitchen drama. The play mythologies of what it means to be a republic(an), how that’s changed over time, and what to do when you discover your supposedly future life partner has just voted Republican. And you are not “a Republican.” Talking Studio talked with the play’s author Daria Miyeko Marinelli, director ameenah kaplan, and Tantrum Theater’s Artistic Director Michael Lincoln to get a behind-the-scenes look at how this play took shape in the age of streamed and Zoomed content, yet still feels like live theater.
