In this episode of Pet Pals, RadioStPete.comINSIDER news director Nanette Wiser chats with Karl Riemensperger and his delightful books about Gunner, the adorable Black Labrador Retriever. Karl, a proud U.S. Marine veteran, has been married to his wife Karen since 2009. They share a deep love for Labrador Retrievers, often opening their home to dogs in need of a temporary haven. Their adventures with their beloved dog Gunner, who formed a special bond with their young son Kaiden, inspired Karl to write his first children’s storybook, “Gunner Gets Lucky”, because children taught early that adopting older dogs from shelters and rescues groups is often far more rewarding and joyful than buying a new puppy… not always, but the homeless dog population is a crisis worth solving. Gunner is a 10-year-old Black Labrador Retriever who came to their family as a foster via Florida All-Retriever Rescue (FARR) in 2019. Gunner successfully made their foster house his "furever" home and he has been a part of their family ever since! He loves to play fetch and swim (like it's nobody's business), understands a LOT of human words, tucks his boy into bed every night, and is always up for a car ride, but his favorite rides include grabbing a "pup-cup" at Twistee Treat! Determined to share Gunner’s heartwarming story and support animal rescues, Karl penned the first book in what quickly grew into a series of seven and counting. As a father of five, Karl brings his bedtime storytelling expertise to each book, crafting stories that entertain both children and parents with humor and heart. Help support fur-babbies and animal rescue organizations and ask about the new Paw-Port for Gunnar! Says Karl: "Spread the message the Gunner Goes books hope to achieve… that dogs, like sweet Gunner, are available at many rescues and shelters. The book series itself provides an opportunity for a dialogue between parent and child to discuss animal rescue and adoption."
