Outline of class #6: -Continue explaning the 2nd of four intro. principles: 2) Acting on Knowledge *الشاطبي Al-Shatiby: The main goal for knowledge is that it is means to worship Allah and every knowledge that does not benefit action there is nothing in sharieh to indicate that its praise worthy. -Knowledge results in heart or physical acts. *Knowledge is different than acting. -Merely having knowledge does not necessarily mean one acts on it. -Verses in the Koran to show each is different than the other. *Proofs to show knowledge was sent to be acted upon *A person of knowledge should apply his knowledge because just as body parts testify against one, versus, hadith and knowledge may testify against one. -Quotes pertaining to the importance of applying knowledge. *Should I leave learning since the more I know the more I will be held accountable for? -Some of the knowledge is fard ayn (every individual must know) and one who does not know will be punished. That is most of the knowledge of Tawheed. -As to the extra credit knowledge that is a means for you to reach the highest of jannah. Some of the Ulama compared the level of a Martyr to that of a áalim (knowledgeable). It was discussed in Muftah Dar Alsaadah by Ibn Al qayyem and there is some quotes on that by Ibn Masood and Ibn Al mubarak. -Not only is it means for the peak of heaven but knowledge gives happiness, pleasure and content in this life. Some who had nothing but knowledge and it's application suffered greatly yet felt as if they were in a heaven on this earth. *The higher ur status in knowledge the higher your application needs to be of it because u are held at a higher status by people and by Allah. Thus, the punishment is more severe for a knowledgeable person. -Allah informed the propeht صلى الله عليه وسلم, and his wives if they merely do wrong their punishment is doubled because their reward is doubled due to their status. Likewise, a student of ilm is held a higher standard by Allah most importantly and then by people. -The honour/status is great so the punishment is more severe. *Examples of how the salaf took applying knowledge seriously. *Who are the evil scholars علماء السوء *ِOne of the best means to convey knowledge is by acting upon it. -A very important quote from صيد الخاطر لابن الجوزي Said Al-Khater for Ibn Al-Jozy p.168 on how he was moved by 2 of his scholars who acted upon their knowledge in private and public and did not take compensation for teaching him and others. *Finally, no matter how much one applies and acts according to his knowledge, he should never get conceited. Never get conceited with humans but even more so never get conceited with Allah. *End of lecture, 47:33. Q & A start at that point.
