I have finished two basements now. I want to share what I have learned from these experiences with you.

  1. Get a city permit. You never know what could come back on you. You don’t want to have any issues.
  2. This is time consuming. Whether you are on the phone with a contractor, getting supplies, or working in your basement on the weekend, you will spend a lot of time finishing your basement.
  3. You will save a lot of money. You will literally save thousands of dollars.
  4. It will take more time than if you hire out. When you finish your basement on your own, this is obviously not your full time job like it would be for a contractor you would hire.
  5. It can be hard to find subcontractors. Finding trustworthy contractors who want to do a small job on the side may be challenging.

Have you finished your own basement? What are things you learned? Do you agree or disagree with what I have learned? Let me know in the comments!
