Welcome to another compelling episode of "T & L WTD Let's Talk About It." This week, Terrie and Laurie have the privilege of conversing with Mrs. Phyllis Fehr, M.L.A., R.N., S.A.N.E. Phyllis Fehr's journey took an unexpected turn when, at the age of 53, she received a working diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's. Starting her career as an ICU nurse, Phyllis evolved into a dynamic figure—dementia human rights activist, strategist, policy creator, changer, researcher, teacher, and mentor. Since her diagnosis, Phyllis has committed herself to anti-stigma work in the realm of dementia. Her advocacy extends globally, promoting the rights and abilities of people living with dementia. Phyllis's impactful policy work includes past roles in the Ontario Dementia Advisory Board, Advisory Group for the Ontario Dementia Strategy, and the Early Stage Working Group. Beyond policy, Phyllis co-authored multiple research articles and is a sought-after keynote speaker on the lived experience of dementia, human rights, and anti-stigma education. Her influence reached international platforms, with appearances at the United Nations on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Senate of Canada's Social Affairs, Science, and Technology, and the World Health Organization on Non-communicable diseases. Currently, Phyllis serves as a patient advisory to the Alzheimer’s Board for Canada. She holds board positions in Reimagining Dementia: A Creative Coalition for Justice, Dementia Advocacy Canada: Human Rights Action Team Lead, and is an active member of Dementia Alliance International Alumni. Locally, she provides leadership to the Empowering Dementia-friendly Communities Hamilton, Haldimand project. In this episode, Terrie and Laurie delve into the inspiring story and impactful work of Mrs. Phyllis Fehr—a beacon of advocacy, justice, and awareness in the world of dementia. Join them for an enriching conversation that explores the profound experiences and contributions of this remarkable individual.
