Our hearts need to be continually and intentionally fixed on God, because He is the only one who can truly purify and restore. Our God sees the state of humanity's broken, sinful hearts, but He does not ask us to fix ourselves before coming to Him. King David understood the importance of having a purified heart, because it is only then that we will be able to see God the most fully. In 1 Chronicles 29:18, in a prayer David asks God to "...keep these desires and thoughts in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you" (NIV). This prayer is one that Christ followers should more often repeat, as the tendency of our hearts is not to lean towards righteousness. Only when the hearts of our nation are pure is when our civil government will be pleasing in the eyes of God and a blessing to us as citizens. Thankfully, all God asks of us is the humility to lay down our sin before Him and ask for a purified heart, and He will take care of the rest.
