Perhaps the most profound question that precludes any other form of inquiry is Why Does Anything Exist At All? It is an extremely challenging demand for philosophers and scientists alike, but is this even a legitimate question in the first place? Can it be answered and if so how and what is the role and distinction between necessity and probability? Anthony Aguirre is a Professor of Physics at The University of California at Santa Cruz. He received his Ph.D. in Astronomy in 2000 from Harvard University and spent three years as a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University. Aguirre has worked on a wide variety of topics in theoretical cosmology, ranging from intergalactic dust to galaxy formation to gravity physics to the large-scale structure of inflationary universes and the arrow of time.
