In today's episode, I'll be catching up with my girl Yetti and exploring the world of being a successful black woman DJ and how to find your way in a new space.
About Yetti:

By day, Yetti Obasade works as a design engineer, but at night she moonlights as DJ Fibonacci. A new face on the turntable scene here in the bay; she was born and raised in the Midwest. Her style brings an eclectic and soulful blend of futuristic funk sounds that is sure to keep the vibes high throughout the night. Through hip hop, afrobeat, and upbeat R&B- her love of playing instruments and producing sounds on her own led to her 2015 start in Djing. Her resume now boasts a multitude of local fashion shows, parties, and daytime events. Since relocating to The Bay, her style and vibe have attracted offers from large-scale clients such as Google and popular conferences like AfroTECH. A jack of all trades when it comes to her passion for merging the sciences and the arts, it’s no secret why her name is DJ Fibonacci (@thedjfibonacci).
In this episode, we discuss:

  • How Yetti landed a wedding gig for two former Olympic athletes (:40)
  • Are people actively searching for black women DJs? Is it a trend or here to stay? (4:00)
  • Experience moving to Oakland and starting over (6:20)
  • Landing a gig with Google as a DJ (7:30)
  • Who is Yetti and what inspired her to become a DJ (10:10)
  • Protecting your business at all cost (17:30)
  • Fighting imposter syndrome and raising the price (20:05)
  • Challenges she's faced being a woman in the industry (26:42)
  • Will the DJ industry ever be less male-dominated (35:19)
  • Staying relevant and top of mind during the pandemic (41:06)
  • What's next for DJ Fibonacci? (46:00)
  • Setting boundaries and knowing your worth in business (49:00)
