Dave has served the K-20 space for 25 years through the roles of teacher, assistant principal, athletic director, principal, assistant superintendent, and college professor, and he now works as an education consultant supporting districts. In our conversation, he shares what he’s learned about being a true leader as well as sharing the valuable lesson he learned about arrogance and the role that it played in his career. Through reflection and self-awareness, he was able to transform his leadership style and become an advocate and leader for the staff in his school. Dave has earned a reputation for being a disruptor of the status quo, an innovator, and a change agent. Having served as a classroom teacher, school-based administrator, central office director, and professor of Educational Leadership, he often uses real-life stories and examples of his own life and career to describe why and how we need to confront “the way we have always done it.” He is the author of five books, has earned his doctorate, and attended law school. He has served the K-20 space for 25 years having positions from teacher, assistant principal, athletic director, principal, assistant superintendent, and college professor. He is the 2014 Michigan Administrator of the Year and the 2018 College Educator of the Year, but his greatest accomplishment is playing the role of dad to four incredible kids.
