Welcome back to Season 2 of The Business of Sports Show! This first episode back is an amazing story of being on top of the world to all of a sudden having a quadruple bypass and needing a heart transplant!
A true rollercoaster of a journey and one of redemption. Rhys Thomas is our guest and he talks very openly about his journey from the fields of Johannesburg in South Africa to the wet and muddy pitches in Newport, Wales.
Reaching the highs of professional rugby and being treated like a superstar, leading in to a wild life off the pitch that eventually affected it on the pitch.
Then, life dealt his a big surprise, whilst finishing a bike session with The Scarlets, he felt a pain in his chest and all of a sudden he was being hit with a heart attack - a fit and healthy 29-year-old, professional athlete, being rushed in for emergency surgery and in a coma for 2 weeks!
We talk about that moment and what happened next, the black hole and path of self-destruction that Rhys was speeding down, through to an intervention from his Dad, Half-Brother, and Best Friend that saved his life.
Now living with a machine that keeps him alive, the search is on for a replacement heart.
Rhys is truly open with what he says and the insights that he offers on his former life and his second chance. This episode is why we put these together, Diolch Rhys.
