In this episode, we chat with David Lough. David followed an adventurous spirit to begin his career in overseas shipping, where he spent three formative years in Japan. Bringing insights from this experience to a career in the City, he followed an idea that had "got hold" of him to start Heartwood, the UK's first wealth manager in 1988. After 25 successful years, David found himself once again following a compelling pull, this time towards writing about Churchill, developing into an acclaimed author with books that explore Churchill through his letters and through his money.

David blends a curiosity and appetite for change with the rigour of an analytical mind.

He talks us through his varied and inspiring journey, including:

  • Going to boarding school from a young age, the impact of inspiring teachers and university lecturers
  • Three formative years working in the shipping industry in Japan, where he learned to value differences and the importance of adaptability
  • How history feeds his curiosity and provides a framework through which to view the present
  • Why he doesn't consider any of his choices 'risky'
  • How he sold one business to Handelsbanken and another to AJ Bell
  • His talent for analysing and interpreting information and how it's been the consistent thread through his career in the City and his writing
  • How the ideas grab that hold of you and won't go away are the ones that you have to pursue
