Episode 28: Hit the Books! Books, High School and History with Emily Cook from Build Your Library

In today's episode, I'm interviewing guest Emily Cook, Author of the curriculum "Build Your Library" (BYL), online used book store owner, and curator of history books for homeschoolers. And - gasp - she's done the terrifying and homeschooled kids all the way through!

You'll learn why Emily is fond of the Charlotte Mason style of homeschooling and why it influenced BYL, as well as the importance of using living books, written by passionate authors and engage readers in the subject matter to instill a love of reading in young learners.

We chat about the concerns so many homeschoolers have about homeschooling during the later teenage years, assuring listeners that homeschooling through high school is not just possible, but also easier than you may expect.

And then we dive into tips for creating a high school curriculum tailored to a student's interests and goals, and Emily shares examples of how she set up opportunities for her children based on their passions, such as guiding her daughter toward a creative writing program in college and her other daughter toward art school.

Our conversation touches on the freedom to switch gears in homeschooling, the option to outsource certain subjects or activities that parents may not feel equipped to teach, and books, books, books!

This episode reveals the inspiration behind starting "Build Your Library" and highlights its suitability for a wide range of homeschoolers, including those with different religious worldviews who can add their own beliefs (or none at all) to the curriculum and Emily also shares that there will be more units to come!
