A truly fun & relatable discussion between a recovering accountant & a recovering actuary, my new lifelong friend, Steve Fredlund…AKA The Safari Dude.

Steve & I discuss his journey from incredibly successful, yet unfulfilled actuary, to multi-passionate visionary, keynote speaker, best-selling author, & leader of African safaris.

For ten years, Steve’s journey included two parallel paths: a good life that was becoming increasingly unfulfilling, and humanitarian trips to east Africa that ended on safari. Like chocolate and peanut butter, Steve’s research into happiness and his experiences leading African adventures blended into something remarkable. He discovered the “Big 5” factors that impact both, becoming the foundation of his approach to life, work, & leadership. “The Safari Way” has become a movement increasing the happiness & success of people around the world.

Additionally, Steve is the best-selling author of the hysterical & incredibly relatable book, Do the Unright Thing: Memoir of a People Pleaser…which I encourage you to buy immediately right here.

In this episode, Steve & I discuss:

  • His history of doing the “right” thing as defined by others
  • His realization that he was living someone else’s life, & his journey of figuring out who he really was & what he wanted to do in this world
  • His “throwing up in his trombone” moment & request to be homeschooled
  • The awkward moments that cause us to question our adequacy as humans
  • The TEDx fail that ultimately led to two successful TEDx presentations & his keynote speaking career
  • The processing speed of actuaries & accountants relative to others
  • Permission to speak
  • The exhaustion of trying to “fit in” where we don’t truly belong
  • His invitation to start seeing our day-to-day experiences as part of our epic, safari-like adventure
  • The importance of having the right peeps in your jeep
  • Doing the “unright” thing, even as a people pleaser
  • My new offer…being in the front row at speaking gigs
