Welcome to Part 2 of my conversation with Derek Baron, professional nomad & founder of Wandering Earl!

After graduating from college in 1999, Derek left home for what he expected to be a 3-month trip to Southeast Asia. Instead, he has been traveling the world non-stop since & has visited over 130 countries on 6 continents. He is the founder of the Wandering Earl.com travel blog & Wandering Earl Tours which offers a unique style of laid-back, small-group tours (that I highly recommend).

In this episode, Derek & I discuss:

    • Some of the unexpected imperfections of travel
    • His puzzle solving talents…his ability to recognize tour guests’ needs & rearrange behind the scenes
    • The importance of working with experts who provide spontaneous & unique local experiences
    • Being kidnapped by half-ass amateurs in Bangladesh
    • How bad things happen everywhere…especially if you yell at a bar
    • The affordability of living abroad & why the 50+ crowd is one of the fastest growing migratory segments
    • Considering your reason for travel & connecting with & learning from people who are already doing it
    • Expectation setting before travel
    • Traveling with a group whose style matches your own
    • My recommendation that he go to Poland…tomorrow
    • Adjusting to living in the States for the first time since 1999
    • Simple interior design…his bathmat dilemma & empty fruit basket
