Let's talk about Umwelt. I'm calling this series the animal protagonist, because it is hard to remember that everyone sees the world in their own way. We all have a version of the world where we are the protagonist. We are living as the main character in our own story. Are non human animals any different? For a long time The possibility of Animal emotions was off limits in the scientific community. And although anyone living with an animal, even scientists, could see that animals had emotions, still the scientific community steered away from the subject. It was argued that because Animals couldn't talk there's no way we could ever know for sure if they experienced emotions. And if we could not know for sure then we should act as if they do not.
This policy, has allowed at least Western society to treat animals as if they were not sentient, as if, despite our own perceptions, they did not feel pain or joy. Animals were relegated to no more than living machines which had no moral standing. All that is now beginning to change as many in the scientific community have realized that although we cannot yet prove animals have emotions It doesn't mean we shouldn't ask the question. After all isn't science about asking questions? However the progress has been slow and as you will hear from some of our guests some of the scientific communities still prefer to act as of animals do not experience emotions. So, we are only starting to scratch the surface of understanding other animals perceptions of the world.
In this series I'd like to take a few episodes to introduce you to some of The researchers, philosophers, and professionals who are asking questions about animal perceptions, emotions, preferences, and history.
we're going to talk to Dr Mariska kret, about the current research that goes into understanding expressions of emotions in other animals, we're going to be talking to world famous author Barbara King about how animals experience grief, we'll be talking to Sindhoor panghal a researcher and dog trainer in India about her work with free roaming street dogs, Dr Simon gabois will talk to us about olfaction perception in canids, and Dr Michelle fournette will be giving us insight into the lives of marine mammals through bio acoustics! We'll also be talking to dog trainer Simone Mueller about predation instincts in dogs and how they can be turned into powerful training tools! And as you can imagine there is so much more!
So thank you for joining me as we ask the question what's the deal with animals!
