The Black Physicians’ Association of Ontario (BPAO), the most established organization of Black physicians in the Canada, will be hosting its 14th Annual Health Symposium in Toronto on February 25, 2023. The annual event brings together physicians from across Ontario with an opportunity to hear from respected speakers, engage in important discussions about health and meet with medical peers from the Black community.

Dr. Andrew Thomas, President of BPAO and Chenai Kadungure, Executive Director, BPAO will be live on our show tonight at 7 p.m. Eastern/4 p.m. Eastern.

Dr. Andrew Thomas is a Family Physician who works in Durham Region. He is originally from Whitby, Ontario. He attended Howard University for medical school. Participating in mentorship and training opportunities through the BPAO motivated him to return to Canada to practice medicine. He served as a co-lead for the Black Health Vaccine Initiative (BHVI) clinic in Durham, a co-lead for the SMART initiative, and is the chair of the BPAO board.

Chenai Kadungure has led international economic and community development non-profit programs in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean and North America. She is the Executive Director of The Black Physicians’ Association of Ontario (BPAO) and is happy to support Black Youth Success (BYS) and Rituals for Recovery (RFR). She has extensive experience in research, leadership development, education, economic development and non-profit management. In her spare time she is involved with projects for Rotary International and sits on boards including the Meta Centre. Her current work in anti-black racism in public health inspired her to serve in the BORN Health Equity Advisory Group.

Recently, Andrew and Chenai were on our show.

During our conversation, they talked about:

– A little about themselves – The Black Physicians Association of Ontario – The effect of the pandemic on the Black Physicians Association of Ontario – The need for resources and the change caused by the death of George Floyd – BPAO’s 14th Annual Health Symposium – Innovation and new opportunities brought to the BPAO’s Health Symposium – Becoming empowered to ask questions to your doctor and working with allies in order to build up Black Physicians – How to make things easier and provide more opportunities for Black Physicians
