Ovidio Guzmán López, son of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán and a key leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, rose to prominence alongside his brothers Iván and Jesús Alfredo, collectively known as "Los Chapitos." His involvement in the cartel’s fentanyl operations made him a significant target for U.S. and Mexican authorities. In October 2019, Ovidio was briefly captured by Mexican forces in Culiacán, but a coordinated and violent response from the cartel, known as "El Culiacanazo," forced the government to release him. This event highlighted the cartel’s power and the internal tensions between Los Chapitos and their rival, Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, another prominent leader within the cartel.
In January 2023, Ovidio was recaptured in a surprise military operation and later extradited to the United States in September 2023 to face drug trafficking charges. El Mayo, long an elusive figure, was reportedly arrested in 2024 after Joaquín Guzmán López allegedly struck a deal with U.S. authorities, further destabilizing the cartel’s leadership. These arrests have thrown the Sinaloa Cartel into a state of uncertainty, with internal divisions and power struggles threatening its future. While Ovidio awaits trial, the cartel’s fate remains unclear, as Los Chapitos face challenges from within and outside their organization.
