Episode Outline
The last weekend of November 2022 saw protests across China, largely associated with the country's zero-covid policies. Despite responses by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), protests continued, leading some to wonder how far they might go, if they could become a new Tiananmen Square, or threaten the CCP's legitimacy - especially in light of the 20th National Congress of the CCP where Xi was elected for life. Pyotr explored these themes with James Palmer, with questions involving:

  1. What triggered the protests and how severe were they?
  2. Is there a high probability they will continue?
  3. How does this affect Xi's popularity or his decision-making?
  4. Are these trends and other internal issues undermining Chinese foreign policy?
  5. What could these developments mean for Taiwan?
