In any given night in 2023, roughly 653,000 people experienced homelessness–a 12% increase since 2022. And the median home prices has jumped approximately 28% since 2020 along with a significant increase in interest rates. This housing crisis is becoming acute, especially in large cities. So, what can church leaders and other committed Christians do to help? That is the focus of my discussion with Dr. Reginald Fletcher from Living Word Baptist Church.

Dr. Reginald Fletcher graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration and a Master’s Degree in Special Education and is a former high school teacher. Pastor Fletcher is a student of the word of God; he completed his Doctorate of Christian Education from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO. He believes that we should be lifelong learners and continues studying in various fields of knowledge. He has a passion to bring the church of Christ together for Kingdom Building. He desires to work in concert with sister churches and community to advance the Kingdom of Christ, meeting spiritual and human needs.

Key Takeaways:

  • Keys to longevity in ministry as he founded Living Word Baptist Church in 1990 and has led the church for 34 years.
  • Factors that lead to homelessness.
  • Why his ministry began purchasing homes (now 24 properties!) and renting out at below market rates.
  • The idea of starting a Community Development Corporation.
  • Why and how he spearheaded an effort to build Providence Place, a supportive housing unit to assist individuals exiting homelessness.
  • Why his church is launching a mental health hub.
  • An explanation of how the various ministries his church operates fit together to serve the neighborhood.
