  1. He spent several years living in a mud hut in rural Sudan without running water or electricity.
  2. His house was bombed.

Oh yeah, George Clooney also visited him while he lived in Sudan and he was interviewed by the New York Times and NPR. This is a can't miss episode that blew my mind over and over and over and over.
