In this week’s episode of the ‘Happy Lawyer Happy Life Podcast’ I had the pleasure of interviewing Madeline King. Madeline is in the early stages of her lawlife but she really has done so much already! Aside from a number of interesting roles during and after her law studies, it was Madeline’s outlook on her career and her life generally that I really loved learning a little about through this conversation. Madeline had some really helpful insights on how to build the right rituals and habits early in your career in law.

Madeline’s career so far has seen her working in private practice, at the Adminstrative Appeals Tribunal and more recently the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal all of which have built a great platform for her future in our profession. This was a fun conversation- full of law of course but with some great insights particularly for new practitioners on starting out with the right attitude, backing yourself and following your own path into #Lawland.

In this interview, Madeline and I also chatted about-

  • If Madeline was not a lawyer she would have worked in travel as she loves travel and planning.
  • Madeline and her new husband spent their adventure-moon in Egypt and Africa.
  • Madeline’s desire for travel brought her to France to study at age 15.
  • Once she graduated high school she moved to Switzerland at age 18 to become an Au pair for a year.
  • The happiness levels of European countries and the cultural differences her Husband has seen being a Dutch man.
  • The way that Madeline found her way to the law.
  • Madeline started law school at QUT and worked full time while studying full-time.
  • After some good advice, Madeline starting working in legal offices to gain experience and credits the roles that she has received to working while studying.
  • Madeline is currently completing a Masters of Law through Bond University focusing on dispute resolution.
  • Madeline’s 18 month stint at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) and her learnings from this time.
  • Madeline was admitted at the beginning of 2019 and has been working for the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal ever since.
  • Madeline’s tips for finding happiness in the law.
  • We discuss self-care boundaries and the importance of standing by your choices.
  • The common fear of saying ‘no’ to new opportunities but the advantage of saying no.
  • Madeline has found respect as employers acknowledge her life outside of the law.
  • The culture of overwork in law land.
  • Be aware of your abilities and put your best foot forward.
  • Madeline’s tips for building a strong foundation in law.
  • The contention between lawyers and overcoming competitiveness.
  • College of LawMadeline’s Happiness Tip.

Sit back and enjoy this interview with Madeline King
