Professor Wieland Sommer is CEO and founder of Smart Reporting. The company is headquartered in Munich, employing over 60 people and has over 10,000 users in 90 countries around the world. Smart Reporting develops AI-based smart reports for radiologists and pathologists. They recently raised a EUR 15M funding round where we at Crista Galli Ventures participated.

Wieland was in frontline medicine for many years, most recently as the Head of Oncologic Imaging at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles across a range of topics from radiology to public health and neuroscience.

Wieland discusses how to spot a clinical need for innovation and turn this into a business, the principles of key hires in a startup, fundraising and structuring big data. We also touch on Wieland’s reflections on his experience at Harvard University where he did a Masters degree in Public Health (MPH) and whether AI will take over the jobs of radiologists in the decade to come.
