Ever heard of Grainne O Malley, the Pirate Queen of Ireland? In the 1500’s she sailed from Ireland up the Thames to meet Queen Elizabeth 1 at Greenwich Palace to persuade her to stop the English from encroaching on Irish nobles. They struck a deal and became firm pen pals. A story that should have held a place in Irish history, instead was deleted from history and her story became nothing more than a myth. In recent years author Anne Chambers had proven the myth true. Joan Mulloy is a descendant of Grainne. She grew up with the stories of her heroic ancestor, in the same part of Ireland and learned to sail in the same bay. Having studied civil engineering in Galway, Joan left her promising career to focus full time on her dream of competing in the prestigious Vendee Globe Race in 2020. She will race solo (yes, on her own) around the world on a 60 foot yacht. Sounds terrifying! Joan is up for it. If she completes it, she will be the first Irish person to do so. Through a chance meeting in London, I sit down with Joan to hear her story of how her happiness is more important than a pay cheque, why she would take on such a challenge and how she will do it? www.joanmulloyracing.com Instagram: @joanmulloyracing Facebook: Joan Mulloy Racing Twitter: @JMRacing Don’t forget to rate, review & subscribe wherever you get your podcasts.
