The "Spanish Flu" struck the Evergreen State relatively lightly compared to every other state in the country except Oregon. Despite this, nearly 5,000 Washingtonians lost their life to this disease, with half of the victims being between the ages of 20 and 49. The Flu even led to the cancellation of the Stanley Cup due to a Montréal Canadiens player passing away from the disease, marking the only time the Stanley Cup was not awarded after a series had begun.
Though the recent pandemic surpassed the total number of deaths during the Spanish Flu, keep in mind that the population of the United States has tripled since then and record keeping during those days was sketchy at best, so the percentage of people that died due to the flu remains far higher.
