Quick opted against surgery for what is believed to be a groin injury sustained in the final 30 seconds of the first period of the Kings' season-opening game against the San Jose Sharks on Oct. 12. Lombardi said last week that Quick's injury is in the same area as the strained groin that kept him out for almost two months in 2013 and confirmed it was not a knee injury. Peter Budaj was recalled from Ontario of the AHL to take Quick’s place on the roster. https://www.nhl.com/news/los-angeles-goaltender-jonathan-quick-out-indefinitely/c-282838396 http://www.hockey-reference.com/players/q/quickjo01.html

Milestones/Records:

  • Chicago Blackhawks forwardMarian Hossa became the 44th NHL player to reach the 500-goal plateau when he scored a second-period power-play goal against the Philadelphia Flyers on 10/18. Hossa is the fourth active player to reach the milestone, behind Jaromir Jagr (749), Jarome Iginla (612) and Alex Ovechkin(526). Hossa also is within reach of two other career milestones. He is seven assists shy of 600 and seven points from 1,100. https://www.nhl.com/news/game-recap-chicago-blackhawks-philadelphia-flyers/c-282811812
  • Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews scored thefirst four goals of his NHL career, including a hat trick by the 1:25 mark of the second period, to become the first player in the modern era of the NHL (since 1943-44) to score four times in his League debut. Three other players have recorded a hat trick in their League debut in the modern era, according to the Elias Sports Bureau: Quebec Nordiques forward Real Cloutier (Oct. 10, 1979 vs. ATL: 3 G), Dallas Stars forward Fabian Brunnstrom (Oct. 15, 2008 vs. NSH: 3 G) and New York Rangers forward Derek Stepan(Oct. 9, 2010 at BUF: 3 G). three players who accomplished the 4-goal feat on the first day of NHL games, Dec. 19, 1917, but who all had played previously in the National Hockey Association, the direct predecessor to the NHL: Canadiens forward Joe Malone (5 G), Montreal Wanderers forward Harry Hyland (5 G) and Toronto Arenas forward Reg Noble (4 G). Other Interesting Stories:

  • Canucks call on college goalie Matt Hewitt - Matt Hewitt started the day as a student athlete at the University of British Columbia, happy to sleep in on a morning without classes. Before the day ends, Hewitt will be an NHL goaltender, at least for one game. Hewitt dressed as the backup goaltender for the Vancouver Canucks against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday 10/18, taking the ice for warm ups as an emergency backup toJacob Markstrom after No. 1 goalie and scheduled starter Ryan Miller felt "tight" in the morning. Unable to get one of their own goalies to Vancouver from Utica of the American Hockey League in time, the Canucks will turn to Hewitt. Hewitt first got wind of the possibility after waking up late to a phone full of messages about Miller's injury and talk the Canucks might need an emergency backup from UBC, something they've done in past seasons. A few hours later, he got a call from his coach, former Canucks defenseman Sven Butenschon, telling him the NHL job was his for the night. "He said 'you are going up kid' and my heart pretty much stopped right there," Hewitt said. "To have the opportunity to dress for the Canucks, words can't describe how excited I am." Hewitt admits he can't help but think about the possibility of playing. "I never wish for anybody to get hurt but obviously that led to this opportunity to go up with the Canucks tonight so I'll do my best to be ready if anything happens," he said. No matter what happens, though, Hewitt knows his NHL moment ends with the game. "This is a dream come true for tonight but come tomorrow I am a student again," Hewitt said. https://www.nhl.com/news/matt-hewitt-to-serve-as-canucks-backup-goalie/c-282798384
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs pulled 19 banners into the rafters of Air Canada Centre on Saturday 10/15 and, in so doing, they took another strong step toward bridging their storied past to a promising present and future. In a dramatic ceremony to begin their Centennial Anniversary, the Maple Leafs announced they were retiring 11 numbers -- 10 of which previously were designated honored numbers -- in an ultimate tribute to the 17 men who wore them.
    • 1:Goalies Turk Broda (1967) and Johnny Bower (1976)
    • 4:Defenseman Clarence "Hap" Day (1961) and forward Leonard "Red" Kelly (1969)
    • 7:Defensemen Frank "King" Clancy (1958) and Tim Horton (1977)
    • 9:Forwards Charlie Conacher (1961) and Ted "Teeder" Kennedy (1966)
    • 10:Forwards Syl Apps (1961) and George Armstrong (1975)
    • 13:Forward Mats Sundin (2012)
    • 14:Forward Dave Keon (1986)
    • 17:Forward Wendel Clark
    • 21:Defenseman Borje Salming (1996)
    • 27:Forwards Frank Mahovlich (1981) and Darryl Sittler (1989)
    • 93:Forward Doug Gilmour (2011).
  • The honored numbers theoretically remained available for use, but only Salming's No. 21 was being worn by a current player, forwardJames van Riemsdyk, who on Saturday switched to No. 25. https://www.nhl.com/news/maple-leafs-retire-11-numbers-at-ceremony/c-282698500

At 19 years, 26 days, Elias says that Matthews also became the third-youngest player in NHL history to scored four goals in a game, behind Toronto's Jack Hamilton on Dec. 4, 1943 (18 years, 185 days) and Washington's Bobby Carpenter on Feb. 25, 1982 (18 years, 227 days). https://www.nhl.com/news/auston-matthews-scores-4-goals-vs-senators/c-282613348 https://www.nhl.com/news/twitter-reacts-to-auston-matthews-four-goal-night/c-282601984
