Transactions

• Forward Brett Howden signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday. Howden, 18, was selected by the Lightning with the No. 27 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. He is captain of Moose Jaw of the Western Hockey League and has 16 goals and 16 assists in 21 games this season. • Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan signed a three-year contract extension through the 2019-20 season Monday. Sullivan, 48, took over as Penguins coach after Mike Johnston was fired on Dec. 12, 2015. The Penguins finished the season 33-16-5 and won the Stanley Cup for the fourth time in their history with a six-game series win against the San Jose Sharks in the Stanley Cup Final. Sullivan became the sixth American-born coach in NHL history, and the fourth coach after taking over during a season, to win the Stanley Cup. The Penguins were 16-8 during the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs and are 55-24-10 in the regular season since he took over. • ForwardArtemi Panarin is happy he'll remain with the Chicago Blackhawks through the 2018-19 season after agreeing to a two-year contract. Panarin's linemate, forward Patrick Kane, is almost as thrilled. TSN reported that the contract is worth $12 million, an average annual value of $6 million. Panarin is in the final year of a two-year, entry-level contract he signed on April 29, 2015, and would have become a restricted free agent this offseason. Performance bonuses have made the average annual value of his contract $3.5 million, but the NHL salary-cap charge is $812,500 this season, according to Cap Friendly.

Injuries

· Nashville Predators defenseman P.K. Subban will miss at least the next two games with an upper-body injury. Subban, who hasn't played since a 5-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 15, did not practice Wednesday and remains day to day. He has seven goals and 10 assists (17 points) and is minus-11 in his first season with Nashville after he was traded by the Montreal Canadiens for Shea Weber on June 29. https://www.nhl.com/news/pk-subban-out-next-two-games/c-285102492 · New Jersey Devils left wing Taylor Hall is day to day with a lower-body injury and will not play against the Washington Capitals on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CSN-DC). The Devils said Hall's injury is unrelated to the arthroscopic knee surgery he had Nov. 16 that forced him to miss eight games. Hall, 25, had an assist in 16:48 of ice time in a 5-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday. Dumoulin has seven assists and is minus-8 in 35 games. Barkov left in the second period of a 3-2 shootout loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday and did not return. He was hit in the side by a slap shot from teammate Keith Yandle, although Rowe said the injury was not to Barkov's ribs. Murray left the game Wednesday after the second period. Ducks defenseman Sami Vatanen will miss the two-game road trip against the Calgary Flames on Thursday (9 p.m. ET; SN360, PRIME, NHL.TV) and Vancouver Canucks on Friday with an illness. · Nick Foligno scored a late power-play goal, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 37 saves to lift the Columbus Blue Jackets to their 13th straight win, 4-3 against the Boston Bruins at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday. · Jared Spurgeon scored at 2:46 of overtime to give the Minnesota Wild a 3-2 victory against the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena on Tuesday, extending their winning streak to 11 games. · Evgeny Malkin scored his 800th career point, when he scored a goal in a 4-1 win vs the Devils on Friday · Florida Panthers right wing Jaromir Jagr , Los Angeles Kings center Jeff Carter and Edmonton Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week ending Dec. 25. Jagr led the League with five assists in three games to move into second place in all-time NHL scoring (755-1,134-1,889 in 1,664 GP) and power the Panthers (15-14-6, 36 points) to three out of a possible six standings points. Jagr collected one helper, in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins Dec. 22, to move past Messier and into sole possession of second place in all-time NHL scoring. Carter paced the NHL with five goals in three contests to lift the Kings (17-13-4, 38 points) to four out of a possible six standings points. Talbot went 2-0-1 with a 2.26 goals-against average and .926 save percentage to backstop the Oilers (18-12-6, 42 points) to five out of a possible six standings points. · Shane Doan scored his 400th NHL goal Friday in his 1,500th game. The forward scored for the Arizona Coyotes with 44 seconds left in the second period against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Gila River Arena. He has four goals in 34 games this season. Doan has played all of his 21 NHL seasons with the Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise. He is the 93rd NHL player to score 400, and the 17th to play 1,500 games. The 40-year-old is the fifth NHL player from a current franchise to hold its records for games played, goals, assists, points, game-winning goals and power-play goals, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The 36-year-old scored on a penalty shot in overtime to give the Predators a 3-2 win against the New York Rangers on Dec. 23, 2000, the first overtime penalty shot goal in NHL history. Legwand last played in the NHL in 2015-16 when he had five goals and nine assists in 79 games with the Buffalo Sabres. He also played for the Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators and finished his NHL career with 228 goals and 390 assists (618 points) in 1,136 NHL games from 1998-2016. · The postponed game between the Carolina Hurricanes and Detroit Red Wings, originally scheduled to be played on Dec. 19, has been rescheduled for Monday, March 27, 2017 at PNC Arena, the National Hockey League announced today. Wayne: Barys forward Nigel Dawes scored his eighth KHL hat-trick to lead Barys to a valuable 5-3 win over the defending champion Metallurg Magnitogorsk and write his name in the league’s history books. Dawes led a first-period blitz to help his team into a 4-0 lead and become the first player to post eight trebles in KHL action. Nikita Ivanov was the other Barys goalscorer. Dawes has 212 games in the NHL with the Rangers, Coyotes, Flames, Thrashers, and Canadiens. He has 39 goals and 45 assists for 84 points. His best season in the NHL was in 09-10 with the Flames when he had 14g 18a (32p) in 66 games. He has played the last 6 seasons in the KHL, playing 314 games, and netting 153g 114a for 267 pts.

Charlie McAvoy, a Boston Bruins prospect, also making the 23-man roster were goaltender Jake Oettinger (2017 draft eligible) and forwards Patrick Harper (Nashville Predators), Jordan Greenway (Minnesota Wild), Clayton Keller (Arizona Coyotes) and Kieffer Bellows (New York Islanders). Boston University defenseman Chad Krys (Chicago Blackhawks) was released from the team Friday. The last time as many as six players from the same team played for the United States at the WJC was 1979, when the University of Minnesota sent six players to Sweden: Aaron Broten, Neal Broten, Bryan Erickson, Jim Jetland, Mike Ramsey and Steve Ulseth.
