Chapter Two Notes:
The Jackson 5 and Solo Stardom (1971-1979)

1. Michael Jackson continues to front The Jackson 5 as a teen, now known as The Jackson 5ive.

2. Tensions arise between The Jackson 5 and Motown Records regarding creative control, financial disputes, touring, and shifting focus.

3. In 1975, The Jackson 5 leaves Motown and signs with CBS Records, renaming them The Jacksons.

4. Jackson starts a solo career in parallel with The Jackson 5, releasing his debut album "Got to Be There" in 1972 at age 13.

5. "Got to Be There" showcases Michael's versatility as a vocalist, with hits like the title track and "Rockin' Robin."

6. Challenges of a parallel career include time management, creative differences, financial considerations, and public perception.

7. Lessons for independent artists include open communication, prioritizing the group, transparency, maintaining focus, and managing expectations.

8. Positive examples of successful parallel careers include Beyoncé with Destiny's Child and Pharrell Williams with The Neptunes.
