Putnam has been working as an engineer since 1987 starting with General Electric in the Syracuse, NY area, predominantly as a Test Engineer. Early in his career he used a number of languages to perform this role. In 2002 Putnam started his own company, North Shore Technology, Inc., and has been making his living developing LabVIEW programs since. The projects range from a test system that recorded the data from drop testing safety harnesses, to Real Time FPGA control of the output of a submarine sonar system. Now, after 30 years of LabVIEW he is winding down, pondering "retirement" whatever that means.

Sam and Putnam talk about how running a business is more than being a good engineer.
