When you want to improve your speaking, it’s important to expand your vocabulary. When you expand your vocabulary, you elevate your mental dictionary and give yourself the chance to use words that are more descriptive, precise and articulate.

But learning new words to expand your vocabulary isn’t just a matter of picking up a dictionary. It requires a more thoughtful process of finding the right vocabulary, recording it, memorising it and using it. When each of these steps are performed in the right way, it will definitely help you to commit new words to your mental dictionary so you can recall them at a later time and improve your speaking.

In this episode, I talk about:

  • 5 Steps to expanding your vocabulary so you can improve your speaking
  • How to find new vocabulary to learn
  • The word journals that I use for Japanese, French and English vocabulary
  • Digital apps to learn new vocabulary, record and memorise those words
  • Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve
  • Moving new vocabulary from short term to long term memory using Spaced Repetition
  • Using new vocabulary to memorise it better
  • The first word you should put in your word journal

Resources that I mentioned in this episode:

  • Moleskin Notebooks or Paperage notebooks (for word journal)
  • Leuchtturm1917 notebooks (for word journal)
  • Digital Apps for vocabulary building: Vocabulary.com, Vocabulary Builder by Magoosh, Word a Day Widget
  • EP081 Articulate Complicated Thoughts Clearly
  • Kara’s YouTube channel playlist for “Be More Articulate and Well Spoken”
