In this episode, we explore the noble lie- a lie told by the powerful to get people to do what they consider to be good, but which the people wouldn't support normally. In philosophy, the noble lie is told in the service of a greater good. But in modern politics, it is simply told to get people to agree to support evil and/or ineffective politicians, and make people forget what is in their interests, by tricking them into believing the their political opponents are worse. We find that we never get good government out of a contest over who is least bad. And as a result, the only people who are served by the noble lie are the powerful who use the people. The solution is to demand good government and benefits from citizenship.
