Never in a million years did I think I would get this interview. In 1998, when I was 17/18, I was still (even after their popularity had waned in the face of the mainstream) a diehard Def Leppard fan. Steve Clark was one of my earliest guitar influences, right up there with Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. When their VH1 Behind The Music special aired, I first saw Lorelei Shellist, who was Steve's fiancee. The way she spoke about him was so loving, and offered a perspective of him that differed from the band and the industry as a whole. It would have been an honor for me to sit down with her and get to know her as a person...and it all started with a Facebook message. I studied her modeling career, and new she had started a fashion line called "The Dream Dress by Runway Runaway." And I wondered what Runway Runaway was. Well, "Runway Runaway" is her autobiography, and the Dream Dress is her line of clothing. It was great to see that she kept busy, and built her brand on her own. I messaged her and asked her if she would like to be a part of the podcast, and discuss her career, her book, her fashion line, and of course - Steve Clark. Expecting a "thank you, but no thank you," I instead received an "I would love to be a part of your podcast." #JACKPOT! Alongside my partner in crime Denise Escobar (aka Lady Dee), we listened to the audiobook of "Runway Runaway," and all we could say is wow - what a book. Lorelei is a warrior, a survivor, and a victor. An inspiration for young kids who may be dealing with neglect, or abuse, and lack of confidence. She overcame all of that to be at the top of her league. People may wonder - why interview a model? Well, it's not just "pout for the camera," "sashay," "strike a pose," etc. It's a business where they only allow an elite few to enter, and Lorelei was modeling from the 1970s to fairly recently. People could learn a lot from her, and has a great story to tell. Truth is that modeling is an artform. And in my world, all art is valid. Denise and I are eternally grateful to Lorelei for this opportunity to sit down with her. Enjoy part 1 of our interview. Part 2 is on the way, and that will be more Def Leppard-focused, especially the late, great Steve Clark.
