More than 70% of surveyed water systems failed to meet EPA cyber standards, highlighting the lack of cybersecurity measures in place. These water treatment facilities are not following basic cyber hygiene practices, such as updating outdated systems and conducting regular reviews of their processes. The Safe Water Drinking Act requires these facilities to review their safety assessments and revise plans every five years, which is too long of a timeframe considering the rapidly evolving cyber threats. The high percentage of non-compliant systems is concerning, as it puts the water supply and public health at risk. It is crucial to prioritize the protection of critical infrastructure like water systems.
