Some years ago, when I was a Lieutenant with Orange County Animal Control, I was asked to train deputy sheriff recruits in the area of dealing with protective animals at crime scenes or other emergency locations. This came about after a beloved family pet was shot and killed by deputies who had responded to a burglary-in-process call at a residence. That event made it painfully clear that many law-enforcement personnel had little to no training in dealing with protective animals and resorted to immediate lethal force when confronted with a family pet. Of course, one of the best bits of information all emergency personnel can use before they arrive to the scene of an emergency is whether or not a pet is there. And thanks to Smart911, a new service for pet owners, this information is being made available to emergency response agencies.
