Some years ago, when I was a Lieutenant with Orange County Animal Control, I was asked to train deputy sheriff recruits in the area of dealing with protective animals at crime scenes or other emergency locations. This came about after a beloved family pet was shot and killed by deputies who had responded to a burglary-in-process call at a residence. That event made it painfully clear that many law-enforcement personnel had little to no training in dealing with protective animals and resorted to immediate lethal force when confronted with a family pet. And thanks to Smart911, a new service for pet owners, this information is being made available to emergency response agencies. Jessica Rose from RAVE mobile Safety will be by shortly to tell us about all the details. Then after our halftime break, Ashley Cunningham, the president and founder of Barks of Love Animal Rescue will be checking in to talk about all the latest news from her organization and tails with happy endings.
