An unwanted estrangement from an adult child is a reason many parents seek some kind of counseling. Some go to therapy for the first time when their relationship with their adult child(ren) breaks down.

Good therapy provides emotional support and often leads to insight. But truly successful therapy leads to profound and permanent changes through the process of healing.

It’s this healing that adds strength and skill to parents’ reconciliation efforts with their estranged adult children.

Do parents need therapy from someone who specializes in family conflict? Not according to Tina. So what are you supposed to do in therapy? How do you make the most of it when all you can think about is the estrangement?

In this episode, Tina offers six tips for how to make productive use of individual therapy during estrangement. These are based on her own approach, which she acknowledges is one of many.

Whatever kind of therapy you get, make sure you understand and agree with your therapist’s approach. Trust your gut to know what you need. And share this episode with your own therapist if it feels right for you.

For information on why adult children become estranged and what parents can do about it, read Tina's book, Reconnecting With Your Estranged Adult Child.
