Visitors who came to Enniscorthy town in Co. Wexford for the 224th anniversary of the famous battle of Vinegar Hill in June 1798 left bewildered.

There is a stone monument close to the top of Vinegar Hill. On it is inscribed or chiselled out an attempt to tell the story of the rebellion known as the 1798 Rebellion in the county two hundred and twenty-four years ago.

They left bewildered because they couldn’t make it out, they could’nt read the wall or in other words the monument that has inscribed on it a thousand words that attempt to tell the story.

In the 1798 Rebellion in County Wexford, 224 years ago, more than 16,000 or more heavily armed English Government troops surrounded 20,000 lightly-armed insurgents and their families on the hill.

By midday, on 21 June 1798, more than 1,200 (one thousand, two hundred) men, women and children had died there.
