In a fascinating conversation covering several aspects of human psychology, Erica Lane and I talk about how we tend to forget the “hard times”. When the universe hits us with a brick wall, we tend to straighten up and fly right for a while. But with time, the gravity of the lesson may begin to wear off and old habits creep back in.

One of the deeper aspects we cover is the idea of Progress Not Perfection. When we see the choice as a totality, it can be far more challenging to do the right thing. The problem we have is when we fall off the wagon, if we are focused on that one misstep as a representation of the ENTIRE experience, then we won’t be as inclined to jump back into the game.

But when we are able to see our progress as improvement over time, as opposed to an all or nothing game of PASS/FAIL – WIN/LOSE, we are far more likely to take ground in the areas we want to improve.
