Critics of the Bible often mock its supposed morality with claims that Old Testament law says a raped women has to marry her rapist. Does the Bible really place that little value on the human dignity of women?
In the 7th and final episode of a mini-series on Bible and Culture, I am joined by Dr. Sandra Richter, an expert in Old Testament law and ancient near east civilization, to discuss her work on this topic.
Dr. Richer is a professor at Westmont College with degrees from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Harvard University's Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations Department. Her books include the widely acclaimed Epic of Eden and Stewards of Eden. The journal paper that prompted the current episode is - Sandra Richter (2021) "Rape in Israel's world ... and ours: A study of Deuteronomy 22:23–29", Journal of the Evangelical Society, 64.1, 59-76.
