Here are some examples of setting boundaries with yourself:

  • Setting a work schedule and sticking to it (having work hours)
  • Saying “no” to things that aren’t on your priority list
  • Not taking on more client work when you’re maxed out
  • Not overscheduling yourself with sessions and networking
  • Not constantly giving free pictures or showing up anytime you are asked

Let's not forget boundaries in social media. As a photographer and business owner, it's hard to step away from social media. Having boundaries help get you out of numbing-out mode. Example from my own life - I only watch TikTok on Friday + Saturday evenings.

Other boundaries I had in my business were "No working on weekends". Yes, I know many if not most photographers love to fill their weekends, but at the time of this boundaries' creation, I was a single mom and weekends were valuable to me and I created the structure in my business to financially allow me to follow through.

Another one was a strict holiday deadline. I never did any holiday-themed images/sessions so my cut-off was November 15th. Anything after that would have to wait for January as I worked hard to make sure I could take off the entire month of December to enjoy my family.

The problem with social media? There are many problems, BUT, one of the big ones is you are constantly CONSUMING content when you are created to CREATE. By nature as a photographer you are a creative person -- don't forget to create more than you consume.
