Editor's notes from this interview: The Great Depression began in 1929. The emphasis placed on 1933 pertains to the beginning of President Roosevelt's term. The draft did in fact begin before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The first peacetime draft began on September 16th, 1940 and continued until 1947.
